If you are reading this probably Steampunk is nothing new for you. Anyway, and just in case Steampunk doesn’t ring a bell, finding information about this retrofuturism is quite easy; for instance you could have a look at Wikipedia.
Periodically we will be paying our particular tribute to Steampunk, as it has become one of our main sources of inspiration. Let us try to give you a general vision about the contemporary Steampunk with only three resources: a short video, a map and a chart.

Illustrative enough, or further information would be welcome? We look forward to receiving your feedback!
We are most pleased to share with you this small experiment, a short video with a selection of some of our 2011 designs. The video lasts slightly over one minute, hope you like it!
We are glad to invite you to visit the blog of the Jewelry Master Alejandro Alloco, Irene’s coach. He has been so kind to feature some of our early designs in ‘Clases de Joyería’ (wich means ‘Jewelry lessons’). We feel very honored and would like to thank him for this gesture.
As you know, Decimononic has presence in many social media. We have active profiles in platforms like Delicious, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, Twitter, You Tube… where we do our best to engage with other users and contribute great value. Should this be surprising? We don’t think so, but we have been asked recently why we spend time sharing content that don’t seem to be directly related to our core activity.
The answer to this question is pretty simple. As we have always said, Decimononic was born as a creative challenge aimed at people who feel unique individuals. This means that…
- We are glad to find and share content related to our main sources of inspiration: retrofuturism, biomechanics, art-nouveau, ancient civilizations, XIX Century, industrial culture, steampunk, vintage… Just because we emphasize the power of the individual it doesn’t entail we can’t believe in the concept of community. In fact we are absolutely convinced that our vision is going to be shared by many others like us, many others that value the singularity of every human being.
- We do think that Decimononic is becoming much more than a collection of particular artisan pieces. We are convinced that it is going to arise as a complete aesthetic approach, a solid life attitude.
Let’s take our Tumblr account as an example. Although different kinds of content may be found here, most of the posts focus in fashion (displaying complete outfits or even accessories). We choose these elements asking ourselves: would this suit our own designs? Is this appropriate for our vision of the world? Is this different, does it praise the individual?
This is why we are sure that sharing meaningful content aligned with our vision is well-invested time. Sharing is one of our main resources to build community and give depth to Decimononic.
One year ago we didn’t know much about fine jewelry. However, 365 days later Irene is steadily improving her jeweller skills with the Argentinian master Alejandro Allocco, we’ve got a nice library of jewelry books and a wide range of suppliers. Sterling silver sheet from UK, ancient British coins from India, sterling silver bezels from Israel, sterling silver wire from France, beads or watch movements from the USA… and obviously other raw materials, furniture and tools from Spanish partners, such us leather or pure silver shot.
There many reasons for this: most of this stuff is not very affordable and even some items cannot be easily got anywhere, so if we want to guarantee quality and competitive prices we do need to optimize our purchase activity. Sometimes it seems that the world is becoming smaller and smaller, and that has some advantages.
However, on the other hand some disadvantages can be easily found. For example you only need to go for a walk in the main commercial street of any big city all over the world to realize that the same companies are everywhere. Considering the growing mixture of cultures, diversity should be stronger than ever… but it just doesn’t seem so. In fact, it is happening just the opposite: global trends in fashion and even aesthetics are becoming a kind of dictatorship, a strong homogenisation we don’t like at all.
We do think that every one of us has a different story to tell, every single person is unique. And we conceive Decimononic as a way to boost this uniqueness, designing singular pieces for singular individuals and creating inspiration sources for all of us who really want to honour the singularity of every human being. Are you one of us?
