Diamanda Galás needs no presentation. She is a living legend.
Born in 1955, this American composer, vocalist, pianist, painter and performance artist has worked with many avant-garde composers (Iannis Xenakis, Vinko Globokar and John Zorn just to name a few of them) and collaborated with several jazz musicians (Bobby Bradford, John Paul Jones, etc.). In addition, Galás has often worked in the film industry with directors such as Francis Ford, Oliver Stone, Wes Craven, Clive Barker, Derek Jarman, Hideo Nakata, Mercedes Moncada and others.
I had the opportunity to attend one of her concerts back in 2008 and it was an unforgettable experience.Diamanda Galás is a singular artist, no doubt.
1.- About Steampunk Hands Around the World
For second year in a row, Steampunk Hands around the World has thrived throughout February.
As the promoter of this event, Kevin Steil, said, Steampunk Hands Around the World 2015- Our Playground, Our Classroom, Our Workshop is a month long event in February 2015 showing and sharing how steampunk and the community is where we can play, learn, and create. Through these means, we come together as a community to forge new connections and friendships, inspire and be inspired by each other, and create realities from the stuff of dreams.
2.- A different approach this time
Naturally most of the initiatives have been conceived by the Steampunk community for the Steampunk community; Irene and I dit this ourselves last year, indeed. However, this time we wanted to take a different approach. Why? Because the Steampunk movement is not isolated, it interacts and influences other communities worlwide. In fact, we explored the existing link between Steampunk fashion and Haute Couture some time ago, so this time we began to wonder… may Steampunk ethos and aesthetics be impacting on other alternative lifestyle scenes? If so, how? And we said… alright, let’s find out!
As scheduled, Inhorgenta Munich took place from 20th to 23rd February. It is one of the most important events for the jewelry industry worlwide, specially within Europe. Irene and I had the chance to visit this trade fair on 21st and 22nd and it was a great experience. We even had time to do some sightseeing the morning of Sunday 22nd and we can’t deny that Munich is a charming city, hopefully we will be back in the near future.
I have written a brief review of the event for the Asociación Joyas de Autor, it is already available on its website (Spanish language): “La Joya de Autor en Inhorgenta 2015”.
About Thomas Kuntz
A new project of Thomas Kuntz, the film ‘The occult world of automata’, has given us the perfect excuse to introduce you to the creative world of this genius.
Born in 1965 in Phoenix (Arizona – USA), Thomas J. Kuntz is a contemporary artist on a mission: bringing ancient arcana and modern technologies together as weapons for aesthetic enlightenment. His father was a surgeon and his mother a folk artist/doll maker, and he has been working as a professional artist since 1986.
Kuntz takes an alchemical approach to his art, being designer, sculptor, mechanician, automatist, animator, modelmaker, painter and conceptualist… all in one.
