This is an atypical post for this series because this time we did not found the music; the music found us. Clara Engel contacted us because she though that her songs would suit ‘A Singular Sountradck’ and, after listening to her album ‘Ashes and Tangerines’ we could deny that she was absolutely right. As British poet Jeremy Reed said:
‘Clara Engel’s voice comes to me from that deepest of all places, imaginative space, from which she visually retrieves an inner landscape converted by breath into the rock equivalent of poetry. Rarely has a voice sounded so authoritative, so unapologetic in its disclosures, so sure of its direction in going home into song’.
I.- Who is Clara Engel?
Clara Engel is an independent Toronto-based artist with a great deal of talent. Her latest album, ‘Ashes and Tangerines’, was released on 6th December 2013 including 11 songs written and performed by her (see full credits below). We have chosen this ‘Tangerines’ video, that includes images by American filmmaker, actor and pioneer of underground cinema Jack Smith. The final version of this song is available here: ‘Tangerines’ on Bandcamp, lyrics below.

‘I really think that creating clothes and fashion has to be a statement about how we live and where we live and what’s happening in the world’.
Have you heard about Alexander McQueen? If you have not been hiding under a rock for a long time, probably you have. Have you ever thought that Alexander McQueen was a lone genius? Then you may be surprised that this is not totally true. In fact, Sarah Burton lived underneath his shadow for 14 years. Today she is is Creative Director for Alexander McQueen Trading Limited. Now let’s start from the beginning.
Sarah Burton was born Sarah Heard in Cheshire in 1974. Her early years elapsed between Withington Girl’s School, Manchester Polytechnic and Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London. During her third year in Central St Martins she was interviewed for a year’s placement at Alexander McQueen at the suggestion of her tutor Simon Ungless, a friend of McQueen’s. She joined the company for a year as an intern in 1996 and rejoined full time upon her graduation the year after.
Sarah Burton was appointed Head of Design – Women’s wear in 2000, designing dresses for personalities such as Michelle Obama, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga and Gwyneth Paltrow. Following McQueen’s death in February 2010, and after company owner Gucci confirmed that the brand would continue, Burton was named the new Creative Director of Alexander McQueen Trading Limited in May 2010. She helped shepherd to completion Lee’s last collection for Fall 2010, which was in progress when Lee died, and pulled together the blockbuster retrospective ‘Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute with curator Andrew Bolton, which became one of the most-visited exhibitions in the museum’s 142-year history.
People spend money on what is important to them. It has nothing to do with what they can afford.
Are you indecisive about the acquisition of a fine jewelry piece? Do not worry, I have been in your shoes many times. ‘May this be too expensive for me?’ is a question that we all need to answer sooner or later, you know.
Although it cannot be ignored, I think that the most relevant parameter to take into consideration when evaluating a possible purchase is not price. Are you wondering what it is then? Let me answer this question: the most important facet to consider is, in my humble opinion, value.
This may rise a new question, of course: how can value be measured? Obviously there is not an easy answer for this, but I would consider the following points at least.
Rome is a one-man band started by Jérôme Reuter in late 2005. Jerome was born and raised in Luxemburg, but he lives in Germany at present. Rome has become a cult band in less than 10 years, earning comparisons with legendary songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Jacque Brel. Many of Jerome’s works have some sort of historical backdrop.
‘This silver coil’ is the first official video of the band, taken from the album ‘Hell Money’. We have always loved the atmosphere of Jerome evocative songs and we highly recommend you to see him live once at least… if you get the chance.
It is curious, just some days ago we recommended you this video interview with Kevin Steil and we bring you today a promising initiative promoted by the one and only Airship Ambassador: ‘Steampunk hands around the world’. Without further ado, the official press release.
Press Release – Steampunk Hands Around the World
Just as current day expressions of steampunk are not limited to the literature where it began, the people in the steampunk community are not bound to any one geographical region. Steampunk appears in many forms, and with its popularity, the community has grown to encompass the world.
The celebration and sharing of that global association is at the heart of a new project, Steampunk Hands Around the World, by Kevin Steil, the creator and editor of steampunk news and information resource website, Airship Ambassador. With more than three dozen steampunk creators – bloggers, authors, event organizers, and others – also participating, the month long project is a multi format media presentation about the international connections and communications in the community, for steampunks and non-steampunks alike.
Beginning Sunday, February 2nd, and continuing until Friday, February 28th, the group will show and share that steampunks everywhere are linked together and that new friends are waiting in every conversation.
Steampunk, in its many forms, brings people together in an inclusive and helpful network of similar mind. From sharing book and music review opinions, to playing the newest games and sharing DIY information on fashion and props, the steampunk community easily and comfortably brings together people ages eight to eighty in ways not often seen in other communities.
The full and updated-daily list of participating websites, blogs and events will be posted in the kick-off blog on the Airship Ambassador blog site:
