There are so many elements that make up the Steampunk style and make it so popular. But the most important of them all has to be the fantasy of it all: The bulshy air pirates roaming the sky in H.G Well’s style flying machines looking for loot! Victorian clad heroines in stylish fascinators!
One thinks back to the images from the fantastical ‘Laputa- Castle in the Sky’. The 1980’s Studio Ghibli animation creates a striking Steampunk image with the villainous pirates patrolling the air looking for the elusive Laputa!
Steampunk is not rosy or sweet smelling, it is of engine oil and action! The fashion is top hats and cogs, fitted leather corsets that sit on top of the cotton day dresses. The full length skirts are figure flattering and so very feminine. The essential elements from the past when it comes to dressing also make this style aesthetically pleasing!
At first glance Steampunk can seem like a style from the past, but on closer inspection we soon realise that it’s a very modern style. Not at all like the 1940’s vintage look that has been popular in Europe. A modern take on what we imagine Victorian’s would wear, taking into consideration the finer details too. Those tiny mechanical pieces such as the cogs and wheels that brought larger machines to life!
One of the many reasons that Steampunk is so popular is this: Society is showing a desire to move away from all things minimalist. Although gadgets such as tablets and touch screen phones are the height of fashion, they make everything easier. There is something so attractive about exploration and discovery, especially for those who feel they are lacking the chance to do this. Perhaps a part of us craves the rigid rules that the Victorian era was known for. Basically we long for adventure and Steampunk is a very adventurous style!
Is it but a passing phase? Could it ever be seen as more than just ‘alternative’? Are we as a society ready to let a little bit of this mechanical fantasy into our everyday?
As much as we would love to, it may not always be acceptable to walk into work in a full Steampunk costume. That long striped and frilled ladies tea dress, top hat complete with leather clad goggles! So the Decimononic team has been investing in those more subtle ways in which to express all things Steampunk!
Perhaps Steampunk will become a lifestyle choice for those who wish it to be. Decimononic aims to bring together all the key elements of this look through design.
