March is that time of year when the weather is beginning to get better, most of us are seeing a little more sunshine with those stunning azure blue skies. In just a few weeks we will see springtime in full swing with flowers in full bloom. It’s only right that so many people plan to get married over the next few months during ‘wedding season’.
From the month of May right the way through to October is known unofficially as wedding season in Western Europe. Are you planning to get hitched anytime soon? Will 2013 be the year that you and your significant other finally tie the knot? If so then you will have already begun preparations for your special day. Getting your wedding day just right is a number one priority for all couples. After all you will want to begin your married life in the best way possible-with the perfect wedding day!
We have seen some high profile weddings over the past few years both on and off screen – Bella and Edward in the movie Breaking Dawn Part One, serene and beautiful this was a wedding to capture the imagination. Then the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge here in London, the theme was big and beautiful. These grand ceremonies that have inspired couples everywhere with their own wedding day preparations.
We know that you want to make your own special day an original one that your guests will remember. Themed weddings have now become so very popular. These ‘designer’ weddings are put together to reflect whatever is important to the couple. A chance to make their ceremony stand out from the rest. Traditionalists have organised their weddings with a floral garden party or vintage theme. Others who are into the 1960’s Mod look and scooters style have gone with a monochrome wedding. There have even been ‘knitted’ weddings! Couples who have a love for all things woolly have knitted everything from their wedding cake to the bunting. Months of hard work and preparation go into making this day great.
But what if Steampunk is your thing? Why not put the mechanical magic at the centre of your planning? Make your day extra significant to you and your soon-to-be husband or wife. And you want to make it memorable right? Your Steampunk styled wedding will add some serious fun to your big day. Here are a few idea’s from Decimononic on getting started with your Steampunk wedding day.
1.- The Inspiration
When planning any themed wedding, one must first look at one’s inspiration. Do you have a particular Steampunk character? How did you both meet? Perhaps he was that dashing Victorian inventor who was every inch the gentleman – did he sweep you off your feet at first glance? Could you have been the rough and ready mechanic who met his elegant lady love at a country fair? Or even better while fighting pirates in an airship battle? Maybe you would want to try and recreate scenes from your favorite Steampunk movie or book? You could take this as your starting point, this will help get the ball rolling when it comes to your perfect Industrial inspired day.
2.- The Venue
Where your wedding takes place is an aspect that will need to be sorted out as soon as possible. Steampunk weddings can be done anywhere but what about those couples who wish to go for the whole works? With Steampunk the world is your oyster! Be as individual as you like with your venue-provided this is permitted. Maybe opt for a city Museum of Transport? Use the historical and mechanical as a backdrop to your special day. If it can be done then what a wonderfully Industrial venue to be married in. If the weather is fine, perhaps an old disused but safe over ground railway station could be just the place. Feeling adventurous then why not a sweet woodland wedding? Again permission must be sought from the relevant authorities beforehand. Failing that you can have your perfect Steampunk wedding within walls of a beautiful old castle. The possibilities for your wedding venue are wonderfully endless.
3.- The Dress
While your sumptuous Steampunk venue will attract initial admiration, before long all eyes will be on the bride and groom. For example speculation on what the present Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress was rife for months before the wedding day. So we are not royalty but it is just as important to get the dress right.
It is of paramount importance that the wedding outfits for both the bride and groom are flattering as well as reflect the personality of the person wearing it. While many blushing brides tend to go for the traditional white wedding gown- there are no real hard and fast rules. Feel free to do your own take on the wedding outfit. For example, is there something that you wore when you first met your soon to be husband or wife? For the ladies could it have been that cute fitted tan buckled corset that won him over? Or for the men, did she think your Victorian styled neck tie was particularly dashing? If so why not incorporate these little elements into your wedding day outfit? This could be an amazingly personal way to add that extra bit of romance into the ceremony. Why not just go all out and appear as your Steampunk persona? This could add a great deal of fun to the ceremony! But the decision as to how far you go with your Steampunk wedding day outfit is yours alone.
4.- The Guests
The visitors to your wedding will be from all walks of life. While many of your Steampunk friends will happily turn up in character, this might not always be the case for all of your guests. You may have a few elderly relatives in attendance so it wouldn’t be right to ask them to wear anything they don’t feel comfortable in. Instead, why not send them something small but meaningful that they can easily wear for you? A wristband perhaps or a specially designed leather studded corsage? This will ensure that all of your guests will feel included in the day. It will also be a pretty gift they can take home as a memento of the day.
