1.- Steampunk wedding clothing: the definitive original touch

Your Steampunk inspired wedding could truly be the most original event of the year with a little forward planning and the right organizing. But how does one get that real ‘originality’ especially when it comes to the outfits? Having an individual style is top of the list of wants for most couples about to tie the knot. It’s only natural that you will want to stand out from the crowd in your Steampunk gear.

Well, doing your wedding in a Steampunk style will definitely give you an unexpected twist to your special day. A real edge on the other couples tying the knot this year. In this blog post we will take a closer look at the wedding attire itself and how you can make yours stand out.

Do you have a starting point for what you and your significant other will be wearing on your Steampunk wedding day? Whatever your specifications are, one of the important ones is that the bride and groom will need to be wearing something special. Hundreds if not thousands can be spent by many couples on getting both wedding outfits just right although this doesn’t have to be the case. The traditional white or cream dress with long train is a favorite with many brides-to-be while it’s a top hat and tails for the groom and his best man. There is no reason why you cannot stick with this basic formula and enhance it with Steampunk. You both may decide to wed as your favorite alternate Victorian characters, whatever the case maybe this is where the fun will begin!

For the brides-to-be one idea could be to add your favorite Steampunk accessories to your pretty cream Victorian occasion dress to personalize your outfit. A thick leather tan colored corset with all the trimmings, not forgetting the jauntily placed hat and brooch set at the high collar of your dress. For the groom’s outfit, one simply cannot beat that silken patterned or plain waistcoat along with those cute mechanical devices. Feel free to wear all your favorite inventions on your big day, you will be sure to make an unforgettable impact.

The value of older accessories is truly appreciated too. Know an uncle or aunt who is in possession of that old antique pocket watch or brooch? Ones that you know will fit in beautifully with your wedding outfit while also adding a huge dose of all things sentimental. This is what wedding days are all about so why not ask to borrow these precious pieces? Pin the brooch to a pretty velvet ribbon for a luxurious choker style necklace. An antiquated looking pocket watch would fit beautifully with the groom’s vintage Victorian gentleman style.

2.- Looking for inspiration: Steampunk fashion books

Maybe you are thinking on being a little more daring? The wedding dress itself can be as wild as you want it to be. You can hitch up that hemline or choose a more ‘flouncy’ fabric one that will give your waist and bottom half some old school glamour. There are some fantastic publications that will be able to help you with your wedding day inspiration:

Anatomy of Steampunk - cover

‘The Anatomy of Steampunk: The Fashion of Victorian Futurism’ by Katherine Gleason is a fantastic look into the various aspects of the style. This hardcover book is more than a coffee table read. It picks apart the style in sensible doses which makes it relevant to everyone. A great book for those beginning on their Steampunk style journey.#

Steampunk Fashion - cover

Are you starting from the beginnings with your alternative vintage look? It can be difficult to know where to begin. A great starting point would be a all inclusive and comprehensive guide to help. ‘Steampunk Fashion: The Ultimate Sourcebook to the Modern Victorian Style’ by Evelyn Kriete is a great book to consider investing in. Although it is a shorter book than the title suggests, the main points of Steampunk as a fashion are delightfully shown through the illustrations. A superb source of inspiration for your wedding day style.#

Steampunk your wardrobe - cover

‘Steampunk Your Wardrobe (Design Originals)’ by Calista Taylor is also a favorite with us. This is a fabulous option for those more crafty types. There are a whole host of simple easy to make patterns. This is a book that is more for those wanting to ‘Steampunk’ their existing clothes. Perfect for those who want to add some ruffles to the collar of your shirt or some lovely beaded embellishments to a favorite cotton or silk dress. A wonderful book for the more creative types out there.#

Steampunk Style - cover

Due to be released in October 2013 is the ‘Steampunk Style: The Complete Illustrated Guide for Contraptors, Gizmologists and Primocogglers Everywhere!’ by the Steampunk Oriental Laboratory. The lush illustrations in this publication will offer more than enough inspiration for your wedding steam punk outfit and beyond.#
